Basim Shami (born October 7, 1976) is a Palestinian-born, internationally known businessman and philanthropist known extensively for his contributions in the beauty industry. He has been seen on Celebrity Apprentice, Univision, NBC, and CNN as well as numerous other national and local television outlets. Basim earned his Bachelor of Science as well as a Masters of Human Resource Management from Houston Baptist University. Basim is currently President & CEO of Beauty Elite Group.

Biography

Basim Shami was born in Ramallah. Basim was exposed to the beauty industry through his family. His mother, Izziah Shami, had a passion for utilizing natural ingredients from the earth to create dyes for fabrics and baskets. It was through their example that Basim found his calling for the environment and the well-being of the hairstylist. This resulted in the beginning of his career at Farouk Systems and Beauty Elite Group in the 1990s.

After years of working in various departments at Farouk Systems, he learned and observed every aspect of the business, from customer service, marketing, and international sales to product research and manufacturing. It was during this time that Basim clearly showed his knowledge and talents to run a world-renowned company such as Farouk Systems. In addition to his time at Farouk Systems, Basim Shami also brings an impressive fifteen years of business experience and product development with the founding of the Beauty Elite Group in 1995. Here he developed and manufactured his very own hair care and pet care products like PetSilk. The PetSilk brand resulted in being the products of choice for Continental Airline's "PetSilk Flight Pack" program in 2004. In 2011 Basim Shami has instituted numerous changes and additions to the company. He was instrumental in bringing about the Kardashian Beauty line now sold in the US and over 27 countries. Basim has also signed actress and singer Zendaya as the spokesperson for the CHI brand. On the development side, Basim was an instrumental force in the creation of line extensions for both the CHI and BioSilk brands. He also spearheaded packaging re-designs, imaging and sales promotions.

Business career

Starting in the 1990s, Basim Shami was welcomed into Farouk Systems with the intention of being the next generation to take the company to the next level after his elder brother Rami Shami. Farouk Systems USA was incorporated in 1986 by launching its first line of products. These products consisted of the first ammonia-free hair color as well as the first company to use silk in hair care with BioSilk Silk Therapy developed by Farouk And Rami Shami themselves.

During the 1995 to 2015 time-frame, Farouk Systems enjoyed a strong and steady growth pattern securing patents, beauty awards and distribution worldwide. In 1995, Basim Shami founded the Beauty Elite Group. This privately owned company created and manufactured a line called Petsilk. The PetSilk company was launched by becoming the product of choice for Continental Airline's "PetSilk Flight Pack" program for pets, a program created for pet-friendly travelers in 2004. It was here that Basim Shami was able to independently create a successful line of pet care products. Beauty Elite Group now owns Blowpro and FUEL Hair.

As his career continued to expand, Basim Shami achieved many milestones as the new millennium began in 2000. He began by growing Beauty Elite Group with the addition of the ARUM Aromatherapy line that contained essential oils, body oils and moisturizers in 2004. In 2004 BioPlus SoSilk was added to offer salon quality products for the hair and skin. To further the company's growth, Basim acquired BlowPro in 2014, an award winning line uniquely designed to give better blow dry results. It is sold in North America and Europe, with U.S. doors including Macy's Herald Square, Nordstrom, Ulta, HSN, salons and blowpro.com. In addition to its freestanding Manhattan unit, the brand has in-store service outposts in select Nordstrom doors and Macy's Herald Square. The following year, Basim Shami signed actress Lucy Hale as the Brand Ambassador from the hit TV Series Pretty Little Liars as their spokesperson. To date, Basim has expanded the line to include high end styling tools to complete the perfect blow dry. In 2016, Beauty Elite Group acquired FUEL Hair and will maintain FUEL's DNA as a professional, prestige brand offering innovative formulations sold exclusively through salon distributors and will continue to offer education to stylists and expand its dedicated team of educators across the country.

With Farouk Systems being his main concentration, his father Farouk Shami, Founder and Chairman, welcomed Basim as the new President of the company in 2010. Shortly after this appointment, Basim served as a judge for the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant. In 2011, he was appointed CEO and President taking over full control of Farouk Systems USA. As the new CEO, Basim began to make changes within the company by restructuring internal appointments, hiring teams of experts, creating new lines and tools plus the re-packaging of existing lines.

Starting in 2012, Basim Shami appeared in 3 episodes of H3 All Access. It is a magazine style entertainment show that features celebrity guests including musicians, actors, models, politicians, performers and athletes. As part of his philanthropic efforts, Basim joined his father Farouk Shami donating $1 million in CHI® (TM) and BioSilk®(TM) products to salon owners devastated by the destructive forces of Hurricane Sandy. The assistance consisted of salon product kits and styling tools to help them restart their businesses.

In 2013, he attained numerous triumphs. The first being selected as a finalist for the 2013 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This prestigious award recognizes high-growth entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success. Following this honor, Basim Shami served as a judge for the Miss Texas Teen USA Pageant along with special appearances on Celebrity Apprentice. On June 9, 2013 Basim and other executives headed to West Texas to donate $100,000 in CHI®(TM) and BioSilk® products to salons owners and victims devastated by the explosion that took place the month before. Farouk Systems, in partnership with West Texas Relief Organization and Armstrong McCall distributed products and tools. 15 people were lost in this tragic event, 160 people were injured and over 150 buildings and homes were damaged or destroyed from the explosion.

As 2013 continued, the company's biennial global conference was held where Basim announced that Farouk Systems would be a sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City that fall. Later during the conference, he was joined onstage by Farouk Shami to present a check for $25,000 to Bright Pink, a non-profit organization that focuses on risk reduction and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer. Basim also worked on creating a safer railroad crossing near the company's facility that over 500 employees cross on a daily basis. Before the year was up, one of his proudest moments was the opening of the CHI Lone Star College-North Harris School of Cosmetology. The CHI Charter Schools as of 2015 total 500 with over a million cosmetology students.

On September 20, 2014 at the St. Jude Gala, Basim was recognized as a respected entrepreneur and philanthropist. During this time, Basim also started to align the company with celebrity partnerships. This resulted in a meeting with the Kardashians and signing them to create a full line designed and created for consumers to achieve their same look with high quality hair care containing grape seed oil. 2014 also ear-marked several firsts with the launch of the world's first touch screen dryer called the CHI Touch and a cordless mini flat iron called the CHI Escape.

As 2015 approached, the Kardashian Beauty line launched with a complete line of professional, salon quality hairstyling products sold through select retailers. About mid-year, the line reached distribution to over 27 countries. To continue his goal of bringing "Hollywood" to the company, Basim also signed actress and singer Zendaya to be the First Brand Ambassador for the CHI haircare line. He made this announcement at the company's record breaking Global Conference in Cancun, Mexico on September 19, 2015 with over 5,000 attendees from around the world. In addition to Zendaya joining Farouk Systems, Basim also proclaimed its partnership with Esquire Magazine. This alignment will include a men's line of haircare that is in development. In turn, Esquire and all the Hearst magazines will promote and talk about the line as part of their partnership.

After the company's successful conference, Basim signed the company's first promotional agreement with Univision Communications, Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America. The company's CHI and BioSilk haircare products and styling tools will be used by the hairstyling team at Despierta America (Wake Up America), the station's #1 morning show airing Monday to Friday from 7 to 11 am. The brand will beautify hosts, guests, and internationally known celebrities that appear on the show during the term of the promotion. In the last quarter of 2015, Basim Shami was recognized by the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) for his awareness and advocacy in taking a stand against discrimination. While on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, The Navigation Area Business Association (NABA) Shoes for Kids Organization held an honorary birthday luncheon for Basim Shami at El Tiempo Restaurant in the heart of the East End of Houston. At this luncheon, Basim Shami graciously donated $5,000 to the organization. The NABA Shoes for Kids raises money to distribute new shoes to underprivileged children in the East End community during Christmas time. Most recently, Basim Shami, proudly announced the company's re-instated sponsorship for the upcoming 64th Annual Miss Universe Pageant.
